Psycho-Educational Assessments

Why are psycho-educational assessments needed?

Psycho-Educational Assessments are essential in education because they can help you understand your child’s learning and behavioural profile. They also inform future intervention(s) to fill gaps and promote learning. Psycho-educational assessments are often required for educational placement, access to services, and special accommodations at school, college and university.  Your child will be able to advocate for themselves in the classroom and in daily life by using the results of the psycho-educational assessment to understand how he or she learns.

What are psycho-educational assessments?

Psycho-educational assessments provide information related to overall intellectual ability, and more importantly, about one’s strengths and weaknesses.  A psycho-educational assessment is comprehensive and involves gathering important information about a child’s background, medical history, intellectual ability (including memory) and academic achievement. Other relevant information may also be collected related to motor skills and social, emotional and behavioural functioning.  The assessment varies based on a child’s age and needs. Psycho-educational assessments are used to identify and diagnose learning disabilities, ADHD, language delays, processing difficulties, and executive functioning deficiencies.

The fees for a psycho-educational assessment for kids or teens can range in cost. The cost is not covered by OHIP but many private insurance companies do provide benefits for psychological services.
